The term "specialist" is reserved for veterinarians who have completed rigorous training following completion of four years of veterinary school, and who have obtained certification or an advanced degree in a particular area of expertise. Your family veterinarian may refer you to a specialist; although you are always welcome to seek a second opinion from a specialist on your own. Listed below are Veterinary Specialty Organizations and links to their websites. Most of the sites provide a means to locate a specialist in your area.
